Conquering the Beast Within: How I Fought Depression and Won. . .and How You Can, Too
Published in Paperback by Times Books (September, 1999)
Author: Cait Irwin
Average review score:

Well illustrated and good insights
Irwin's "Conquering the Beast" features some very nice illustrations but a few appear as if she drew them within minutes. Her advice and commentary on depression are indeed accurate and helpful. Still, Irwin and others who have experienced depression must recognize that anti-depressants do not really "conquer" depression. Although they certainly are a miracle, anti-depressants control and subside the symptoms. One hasn't really "conquered" this horror of an illness until the roots of the illness are finally gone. Nevertheless, I would buy or give this book to any teenager struggling with depression, or even family members of a depressed teen. Often those closest to the patient know little about this illness.

Wonderful, sensitive, inspiring--I loved it
This is a terrific book for anyone who wants to understand what depression is and what they can do about it. Cait Irwin may be "only" a teenager but she is wise beyond her years. She has gotten to the heart of it--from the mental and physical anguish you feel when you're depressed, to the way it affects your relationships with your friends and family, to the frustrating process of trying medication after medication, to the incredible sweetness of life post-depression. I loved her wonderful drawings, too. I'd recommend this book to anyone who thinks there's no way out of depression; Cait is living proof that there is.

Excellent source book for teenagers and young adults.
Cait has done an excellent job of writing about a topic that affects so many lives today. She does not gloss over the hard facts and reality, and yet, she offers hope to all who suffer from depression. Her mother, who was her strong supporter through all of this, shows how important it is for families to assist in the healing process! They are a beautiful example of how committed people can battle depression together and win.

Federal Mafia
Published in Paperback by Freedom Books (January, 1992)
Author: Irwin Schiff
Average review score:

No one can stop paying ALL taxes, but you can the income tax
Irwin's book is the 2nd one I read concerning this issue, and was so well done, I kept investigating the claim of the "tax protesters. The truth be told, Americans have an obligation to pay taxes LAWFULLY imposed. However, as Irwin clearly points out, the irs does not lawfully impose this tax (income), because it is incapable of doing so. Therefore, millions of Americans pay what they think is a tax, while in reality, they are unknowingly contributing to the continuation of the collapse of the American System of Truth in taxation, and taxation WITH represention.
Since Irwin's first edition of this book, it has been updated with up to date info, and the results of years of many people's research into the Greatest crime to be imposed on the American people: The misapplication of the tax laws, by a non-government agency, who operate at the will (or the wilfull ignorance) of the US congress. Facts are facts, and that one cannot be properly disputed by anyone of any intellegence. Irwin's voice in this book, can help you to understand this huge, encompassing problem that is difficult to see, because of its emensity, and its huge volumes of information needed to know, in order to understand it.
"Most people fail to understand the tax laws, because they lack the ablity to understand the questions that arise from it" -author unknown. {please excuse spelling errors and typos]

LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL????
Another meticulously referenced and documented book by Irwin Schiff on our present day government and its "judiciary" and the IRS by printing and disecting the actual laws in USC 26 (the internal revenue code). This book will shater all illusions that this is a country liberty and justice for all. Illustrated with excerpts from his actual trial transcripts. I recomend first reading the "THE GREAT INCOME TAX HOAX" to understand and apreciate how the founding fathers intended to limit the governments ability to tax us. Once you have read these two books you will have to ask some very disturbing questions of yourself as to the future of this country.

We Learned In School That This Book Is Banned
We were studying about freedom in school. We have been taught that America is a free country. We were taught that Americans are free to express their thoughts.

Then my classmate Bobby brought in an article he found in the news about the author of this book called "The Federal Mafia". The author is Irwin Schiff. The article said that this book had been banned, and Mr. Schiff can not talk about his beliefs about taxes anymore.

I found this book at the Public Library. It is filled with a lot of information about the IRS, and how the tax system is voluntary.
There are copies of many papers in the book, but most of it I could not understand.

We learned that making people not share their thoughts is called censorship. ...

Bobby was right. I guess that Mr. Schiff is telling the truth. Otherwise he would be in jail, and the government would not be trying to shut him up. I guess that we are not a free country anymore if we can't express our thoughts. I also read that the ACLU and other people are trying to help lift this ban. I hope they help Mr. Schiff win in court. He looks like a nice man. Rebecca age 12, Shohola Pa.

An Interesting Book
This review concerns the revised 1962 edition. Counterfeit money is being circulated throughout Bayport and Frank and Joe try to track down the culprits. While not as good as the original edition, this book is still interesting and exciting, with plenty of action. Read the original edition if you can, but if not the revised edition should not disappoint you.

the action story
Hi my name is Ryan. The Secret of the Old Mill is a really good book.In the story Frank and Joe descover conterfeit $20 dollar bills and a company called Eleckton is making them. The hardys drive over in the Queen and Frank and Joe descover a secret door. Will Frank and Joe solve the conterfeit mystery? Read the book to find out.I recomend this book for people who like stories with a lot of excitement.

The Best Hardy Boys Book
My favorite Hardy Boys book is the Secret of the Old Mill. I loved the part when Ken Blake fell into the river and Frank and Joe jumped into the river to save Ken Blake. I also loved the part when Frank, Joe, and Chet were in the Sleuth and Frank pulled the wires from the engine to stop the boat. I think that the Secret of the Old Mill is the best Hardy Boys book I have read.

The Missing Chum (Hardy Boys, 4)

Average review score:

Really 4.5 stars
This book really deserves 4 1/2 stars but I'm nice so that's why I gave it 5 stars. This book always has a twist or turn. It starts off that Frank and Joe are assigned by Chief Collig to find out why their's trouble in Shantytown which is a town of shacks( wooden broken down houses). So then there's a bank robbery and then their best friends Biff and Chet are kidnapped. They meet Alf at Shantytown. It's action pace with danger at every turn. One minute they jump overboard a ship to helping their friend after he fractures his ankle sliding down a steep hill. They have to trust their instincts in this suspenseful mystery. Can't say more or I'll reveal the end. Read The Great Airport Mystery( Hardy Boys #9) or The House on the Cliff( Hardy Boys #2). Also read the Harry Potter series. This book was a very suspenseful book. It's very adventurious and a very good book.

Audio tape edition read by Bill Irwin
These books are absolutely delightful on audio tape. I grew up reading all the Nancy Drew books but, true to stereotype, never read any of The Hardy Boys. As the mother of two little boys (first and third grade) I began exploring these in our read-aloud time every evening. The boys LOVE them but the whole series (50+ books) is a bit more than I want read as an adult and a daunting quantity of material even for very advanced readers so I was delighted to come across these audio tapes. Bill Irwin does an excellent job of reading the books, treating their slightly dated language and manners with complete respect. The tapes are unabridged although still only two tapes long. My only gripe is the wait for the series as the publisher appears to be releasing only two books every six months or so!

The FOUND Best Book On Earth
It a great boook! I recommened it to everyone who loves The Hardy Boys like me! It was a great book piled with mysetery and suspence.

The Shore Road Mystery (Hardy Boys, 6)
Published in Audio Cassette by Imagination Studio (March, 2003)
Authors: Franklin W. Dixon and Bill Irwin
Average review score:

Not As Good As The Original
The Shore Road Mystery re-write wasn't nearly as good as the original, wherein Frank and Joe bought a used fancy car, fixed it up, and hid in the trunk. Their Trojan Horse technique carried them right into the lair of the auto thieves; after numerous exciting brushes with danger, they were able to escape and bring back the police.

The re-write wasn't nearly as tense. It's possible that was purposeful. At the end of the original, Fenton Hardy muted his pride for his sons' accomplishment with the admonition that their tactic had simply been too dangerous, and they could have been seriously injured or worse.

But that's what made the book good. Kids enjoy stories of that nature because nothing like that ever happens to teens in real life. Really, how many teams of teen-brother detectives do you think are operating in the USA just now, solving crimes and mysteries every other week (while owning cars, motorcycles, ice boats, airplanes, you name it)? Zippo.

Good; Not As Good As The Original
This review concerns the revised 1964 edition. Jack Dodd, a schoolmate of the Hardy's, asks Frank and Joe to solve a family mystery involving a treasure hidden during Pilgrim times. However, after Jack and his father are accused of stealing cars along the Shore Road, they disappear. Did the Dodds go onto hiding so that they could search for the treasure? Did they run away because they are guilty? Or were they kidnapped to make it look as if they ran away? Frank, Joe and Chet work to find the answer and solve the mysteries. This book was quite good; it has a realistic plot, plenty of action and was generally enjoyable. Nonetheless, I prefer the original edition to the revised. The original edition was better written as to the flow of the book and the language used. The Pilgrim mystery, which was not a part of the original, felt tacked on and was not woven into the story very well in my opinion. Both editions are worth reading and since they are only similar in their basic plot and only slightly similar in their endings, I think that most fans could read one and then not feel bored reading the second one later. However, if you're only going to read one, I'd say to go with the original.

I love the Hardy Boys!
This book was Super! I liked pretending I was one of the Hardy Boys. I also tried working out the mysteries with the book. I liked it when they found the Hidden Hideout. I also liked when they spied. I like spying on people myself. I also liked their motorcycles. I loved it!

Buy Your First Home
Published in Paperback by Dearborn Trade Publishing (April, 2000)
Author: Robert Irwin
Average review score:

Useful but a bit basic
We just recently bought our first house. I did use this book often to check out definition of terms, but it was just a bit to simplistic for me. Don't get me wrong- I had no experience in this area (I didn't even know what earnest money was), and I didn't even fully realize what the process was. Still, I found this book to just be a bit to basic. The basics are definitely necessary, but a bit more depth is definitely needed.

A great primer for the first-time home buyer
I'm buying my first home, unfortunately in the ultra-expensive Bay Area. I read a few of the Dummies books, which were adequate, and then came across this book. Irwin's book is a fairly easy read - you can skim the parts you already know (i.e. if you're not buying a fixer-uper, skip that part), and concentrate on what you don't know. He doesn't go very far in depth into any one subject - the book is only 180 pages - but he gives a layman's explanation of almost every part of the home buying process, from offers, to financing, to inspections, to repairs. And I don't think you need anything more in depth than this to buy a home. I actually read this book half-way through my own home buying process, and I still found it very valuable and useful. I can't claim that it saved me any money - it didn't. But it did reassure me that what I was doing was right - and that is well worth the cost of the book.

This helped me understand the homebuying process
I bought this book along with "The 106 Common Mistakes Homebuyers Make (& How to Avoid Them)" (Gary W. Eldred, Ph.D.) and enjoyed both. Irwin's book neatly describes the complete homebuying process and is extremely easy to read. Included in the book are several checklists that I found useful, and discussions on financing options, home remodeling considerations, and tax impacts that owning a home will create. I read the book in a couple days' time and often referred back to it as I was going through the homebuying process; I'm sure you will, too.

Adoption Is a Family Affair! What Relatives and Friends Must Know
Published in Paperback by Perspectives Press (01 May, 2001)
Author: Patricia Irwin Johnston

A Great Book For Relatives of Adopting Couples
I received this book just yesterday and already I've read it twice. I've even marked my favorite passages for my in-laws and relatives to pay close attention to. This is a GREAT book for anyone affected by adoption. The information was presented well and in an easy to read format. I'm sure that after reading this my relatives who have been a little reserved about adoption will come to accept our decision and even enjoy our baby when s/he arrives. This is a MUST for anyone whose is having trouble getting their friends and family to be enthusiastic about adoption.

Wonderful book!
This book is great to give to your relatives when you are considering adoption, are in the process of adopting, or have already adopted a child. It is easy to read, doesn't "talk down" to people, and has a lot of good information. I am giving copies of this book to my parents, mother-in-law, and grandmother! When we first started the adoption process, this book wasn't yet published and I wish it had been. I really wanted something for my close relatives to read so that they would understand what we were doing and also to help them relate to our daughter-to-be. I"m so glad this book is available now! It's not too late for them to benefit by reading it, that's for sure.

Hope you and your relatives enjoy the book also!

WOW! This book changed my mom's mind about adoption!
My mom was pretty hostile when my husband and I decided to adopt older children. She wanted us to have a baby or at least adopt one. We were really upset because we really could have used the support that a girl can only get from her mama. We found this book and gave her a copy. After she read it- her total attitude changed. Instead of talking about how she would never babysit for our kids and asking how we could give them back when we realised our mistake, now she is buying dolls for my little girl, stockpiling treats for grandmas house and passing their pictures around the office. This book is an easy and fast read that clearly acknowledges the very real concerns grandparents have when their child announces the adoption. But in a very gentle and understanding way sets the record straight and tells the reader exactly how to support their adoptive family member. This book is a must read. It covers all types of adoption- not just older child.

Investments (Irwin Series in Finance)
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (March, 1996)
Authors: Zvi Bodie, Alex Kane, and Alan J. Marcus
Average review score:

Very Good Masters level text
Every professor at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business uses this text for the beginning level finance course - Investments. I found the book to be very readable, with excellent examples. It does a good job explaining the pros and cons of various financial models - Portfolio Theory, CAPM, Multi-Factor Asset Pricing, No Arbitrage Bond Pricing, Black-Scholes, etc. You cannot go wrong with the content in this book.

Comprehensive, student-friendly, and extremely helpful
The book by Bodie et al is unquestionably, the best introduction to Investment Theory available today. Please note that there is an emphasis on the word introduction, because there is much that can be covered after the book ends. This book provides a springboard from which the student can take off in different directions viz. Derivatives, Risk Management, Portfolio Management etc.

The language is simple, and there are no mathematical demons in the book. The Concept Check questions are extremely valuable and should be attempted before the reader delves into the equally challenging exercises at the end of the chapters. The book starts with an introduction to the different types of markets and financial instruments present today, and then moves into investments, risk etc. The book touches upon a number of topics including bonds, financial statement analysis, security valuation, derivatives and hedging. Like other multipurpose book, it does not go in-depth into any of these, but provides the reader a brief introduction to each of them for help in further studies. It does dwell a lot on portfolio theories which are described in detail, with numerous examples. The chapter-ending exercises are graded with easier questions in the beginning, and extremely challenging ones in the end.

All in all, a great book!

Jam packed with valuable information
This book has a tremendous amount of valuable information for those of us who want to understand what investments are actually about. There is a lot more to it than the simple bromides peddled in the popular press and media. Yet, when you get some basic concepts down, they become easier to understand and evaluate. The popular press is misleading in its oversimplification and silly statements (like "no one is buying today").

I want to praise this edition's organization. Since it is a text designed for use by students, the fifth edition I used is organized most helpfully. Each chapter has an overview and there are concept check questions at key points of the text that help you assess if you really understood the information you just read. The main points are restated in a concise summary at the end of each chapter and you can review the key terms to make sure you are absorbing the vocabulary.

There are valuable websites listed along the way for additional and related information. The authors and publisher also provide a website with materials including spreadsheets directly related to this book. The part of the site with online quizzes has a few typos and scoring errors, and that should be fixed, but the online materials are generally ok.

The chapter problems are another matter. Some are really projects and should be separated, I feel, from the study questions. They are good to do if you have the time and will certainly help your learning, but they can take some time to work through.

Some of the questions are very simple and are really a quick concept check and they seem out of place when placed along side the "projects". One VERY NICE feature of the questions is the inclusion of sample CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exam questions. This is very useful for those of us thinking about preparing for that process.

It is also worth getting the Solutions Manual. ISBN 0-07-233921-7. Don't by a mismatched solutions manual! As you work through the problems, especially the "projects" it is nice to see how these problems are handled by the authors.

Inside information
I have taken and failed the boards. I now have inside information on what is on the test. I have used many of the review books and NONE of them compare. This easy to read book is the best one and CLOSEST to the actual questions on that exam.
Good luck, TammyJ RN

Great approach to NCLEX...It helped me to pass!!!!!!
The Kaplan review book was a great book to review for my Boards. The approach is easy to understand and facilitates the concept of critical thinking skills necessary to pass the NCLEX. There is only one way to skin a CAT and Kaplan does it with skill and knowledge. I highly recommend this book for review. At this point in your nursing education you have the knowledge to pass the NCLEX Kaplan just shows you how!!

Irwin Toys: The Canadian Star Wars Connection
Published in Paperback by Collector's Guide Pub (June, 2000)
Author: James T. McCallum
Average review score:

A thorough guide to Canadian Star Wars Toys
This is the kind of in-depth thorough Star Wars collecting book that many in the hobby are craving. The author isn't scared to take on an esoteric, yet fascinating slice of Star Wars collectibles (namely the Canadian Star Wars toy line) and cover everything about it in detail, from common items, to variations, to hard-to-find rarities. Some of the rarest pieces pictured in this book appear nowhere else in print.

This is not the book for the beginning Star Wars collector, however I do not know a single longtime Star Wars collector who does not own this resource. The photography could be a little better, but still captures all the essentials.

An important resource for the Star Wars or Kenner collector
I finished reading through James' book this weekend, and I am very impressed with it. The information is displayed in an easy to follow manner, and it works great as a resource guide. It definitely belongs among the reference materials of any vintage Star Wars collector. As a Kenner collector, I also found the book to be full of history about the company. This was a pleasant, and educational surprise.

A wonderful addition to Star Wars reference books
Attention collectors: There is finally a book which focuses only on the vintage Star Wars line released in Canada. There are many rare and highly sought after toys which came out only in Canada. This book successfully organizes and pictures these Canadian Star Wars toys in order to inform the serious Star Wars collector about these rare and often elusive items. There are hundreds of pictures and a lot of useful information. I would recommend this book to any serious Star Wars collector.
